This morning I discovered a Great Spotted Woodpecker has bred in Mercer Wood and now has a nest full of hungry babies inside a tree hole. I managed to get a photo of it, which you can now see in the Gallery.
While in Mercers Wood today I saw or heard 23 species. As well as the Great Spotted Woodpecker I noted Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Wren, Starling, House Sparrow, Dunnock, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, House Martin, Swift, Jackdaw, Magpie, Woodpigeon, Stock Dove, Collared Dove and Pheasant.
As if that wasn’t enough, we also have a Weasel in Mercers Wood. It dashed across the path in front of me as I approached the riverside end.
Walking along the riverside to Morton, I got another 9 species of birds – Willow Warbler, Reed Bunting, Greenfinch, Pied Wagtail, Swallow, Carrion Crow, Mallard and Black-headed Gull, plus a Skylark heard singing in the distance from across the river.
