Lots of butterflies, bees and hoverflies to be seen in Mercers Wood right now.
Butterflies seen in the wood recently include Small White, Large White, Small Tortoiseshell, Comma, Speckled Wood, Painted Lady, Ringlet and Small Skipper.
And today, a very photogenic Red Admiral was flitting about just inside the Mercer Street entrance to the wood. New pictures are now in our gallery.
With the breeding season more or less over for this year, the birds are now mostly quiet, and staying hidden in the foliage. But this afternoon there was a family group of Bullfinches moving about in the middle of the wood – a male, a female and four juveniles.
