We’re well into August now and birds are starting to become active again. Lots of activity going on in Mercers Wood, with plenty of birds, butterflies and other insects. Just outside the wood, on the riverside, I caught a brief glimpse of a dragonfly. Too brief to tell which species it was (brown body, so may have been a female Common Hawker).
But the place to be yesterday afternoon was Field Lane just outside Morton. There, all within a few yards of each other, a flock of about 30 Reed Buntings, another mixed flock of Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Goldfinches and Linnets, a lovely male Great Spotted Woodpecker, and two Little Owls. But the star of the day – four Reed Warblers in a ditch by the roadside (by the house where Airdales are kept).
