Spring is now here, and the birds are active in Mercers Wood. Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, Mistle Thrushes, Robins, Wrens and Chaffinches can be heard singing.
A pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers (male and female) have taken up residence in the wood. I have seen one or both frequently since the last week of January. Let’s hope they might breed here like last year.
A male Merlin was seen around Morton for a week in January. And this afternoon (March 20th) there was a female Hen Harrier at the Morton end of the riverside footpath. It was hunting over the scrub area there, and being mobbed by the local jackdaws.
