Lots of birds in Mercers Wood right now. Spent a hour mooching around the wood and river bank this morning and saw 29 species – Blue Tit, Great Tit, Long-tailed Tit, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Starling, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Wren, Dunnock, House Sparrow, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie, plus on the riverbank Mallard, Black-headed Gull, Pheasant, Sparrowhawk, Rook, a few Swallows, and 2 Whitethroats, and in the wood’s wildflower garden a lovely pair of Linnets.
Also in the wood, seven different types of butterfly – Small White, Small Tortoiseshell, Speckled Wood, Holly Blue, Orange Tip, Peacock, and Comma.
I have been told that a Cuckoo has been heard in the wood recently. I haven’t heard it myself yet. A pair of Great-spotted Woodpeckers are in the area. I have seen one or the other several times recently, and others have told me they’ve heard hammering. Let’s hope they nest again like last year.
